Thompson Sabre
Cold Steel's® Thompson Sabre is not a replica of an existing historical model. It is rather a newly developed, modern combat sabre. It owes its name to the president of Cold Steel®, Lynn C. Thompson, who designed it. The Thompson Sabre was made to Lynn's exact specifications. For decades Lynn has practised historical European as well as Japanese and Filipino martial arts and has trained with all kinds of weapons, from short, light machetes to medieval two-handed swords. From all these different sources, Lynn picked out the characteristics he prefers and integrated them into the Thompson Sabre.
Here is what he says: I wanted to create a fighting sword. Not in the sense of a dueling sword, but a true swordsman's sword for the modern martial artist. When facing several opponents, I consider the edge more important than the point. It offers more options for defending, parrying, countering and moving without being run through in a careless second. Accordingly, the Thompson Sabre, whether on foot or on horseback, is designed first and foremost for cutting, although it is still a good thrusting weapon. It was ground to my exact specifications. Starting from the point, the first 15 cm are razor sharp. The blade then gradually becomes less sharp towards the handle. This leaves it strong enough to block, parry or even strike the opponent's blade effectively. The blade is deeply blued, which not only protects it better against corrosion but also makes it harder to see in the hurry of combat.
The guard of the Thompson Sabre is a modified version of the guard of the 1904 sabre and offers excellent protection for the hand. The substantial handle is wrapped with ray skin and offers enough room even for large, modern fencing gloves. A durable sheath made of strong leather and steel, with a belt loop for comfortable carrying, is included.
1055 Carbon Steel
The carbon content and the relatively small proportions of other elements in this steel make it a very sturdy material that is free of the brittleness inherent in most steels with higher carbon content. This steel is excellently suited to blades that are meant to have great impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed blade knives, machetes and swords.
