Battle Gim Sword

During a trip to research traditional Chinese weapons near Shanghai, the Cold Steel® team visited a respected collector who owned an old Wu Jian sword, also known as a Battle Gim. The appearance and martial aura of this sword were so unique and impressive that this was reason enough for Cold Steel® to want to bring a reproduction of this weapon to customers.

Made by talented smiths, the Battle Gim is made of Cold Steel's® finest Damascus steel. It has a broad, symmetrical point and a somewhat wider, heavier blade than tradition demands. Owing to the resulting forward weight, the razor-sharp double-edged blade is somewhat better suited to cutting and slashing than to thrusting.

A pommel and guard of blackened iron frame the beautiful wooden handle and are lavishly decorated with a filigree design of traditional Chinese peony blossoms and leaves. The same motif is repeated on the chape, throat piece and suspension rings of the matching wooden scabbard.

Damascus Steel
The term Damascus steel, pattern-welded steel or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name derives from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is regarded as the former stronghold and origin of Damascus steel production. As a rule, a hard, high-carbon steel and a soft, low-carbon steel are joined by repeated forge welding and folding. The high-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability and longer edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and higher resistance to breakage. This technique, which arose at a time of poor and variable steel quality, makes it possible to combine the positive properties of the different steels. The differing colouring produced by varying carbon content also creates impressive patterns in the alternating layers. Not least because of these patterns, the Damascus blades of the Middle Ages were credited with an inherent magic.
