Rapier with ribbed swept hilt

According to historians, the rapier first appeared as a new sword form in the late 14th century and became established in large parts of Europe until the late 16th century. In Spain it was demonstrably still in use well into the 18th century. That the rapier remained the undisputed civilian defence and duelling weapon for so long can be attributed to two main advantages: Firstly, its long, narrow, double-edged blade was ideal for delivering precisely aimed thrusts from a long distance. Secondly, its elaborately designed hilt (which was constantly extended - from rings, bars and bows to shell guards and artfully chiselled baskets or cups) provided excellent protection and could confidently catch or ward off blows.
Although the rapier never technically proved ineffective or obsolete, it unfortunately succumbed to the dictates of fashion and had to make way for smaller swords.

Fortunately, Cold Steel® decided to revive this historical classic with its own modern interpretation designed by Dave Baker. The long, narrow blade of Cold Steel's® Ribbed Shell Swept Hilt Rapier is sharpened and beautifully polished. In the forward third it is provided with a single broad fuller that ensures perfect balance. The hilt likewise reflects the finest craftsmanship and the finest material. The classic ribbed basket with its many bars as well as the knuckle bow guarantee unparalleled protection for the hand. The grip itself is made of wood, covered in deep black ray skin and wrapped with decorative wire. It ends in a powerful ribbed pommel that balances the long blade of the rapier excellently.
