Maasai Spear with Sheath
A symbol of the power and strength of the proud East African Maasai people is their elegant war spear. With its long, narrow blade, short wooden shaft and heavy, counterbalancing spike or shoe, this legendary instrument of the Maasai moran, or warrior, is one of the most distinctive spears in the world. The spear is the warrior's most valuable possession and never leaves his hand, except when it rests at his side, planted in the ground with the blade tip pointing upwards. In fact, many Maasai morani develop such confidence in the deadly power of their spear that they refuse to flee from danger as long as it is within reach. This is understandable, as young Maasai morani are required to kill a lion single-handedly with their spear to prove their worth and manhood.
Each spear has been carefully cold-forged from carbon steel and fitted with a robust ash wood shaft and a sturdy, counterbalancing spike. Fully assembled it is approx. 183 cm long and weighs a staggering 1600 g!
The razor-sharp Maasai Spear is supplied unassembled and consists of three parts: first there is the blade itself, which is approx. 55.5 cm long and approx. 4.5 cm wide and has a strong central rib that runs almost to the tip. Then the shaft of American brown ash, which is tapered at both ends and serves as the connecting piece between the shoe and the blade. Finally comes the heavy, solid steel spike which, like the fearsome blade, has been tempered to spring hardness. The sharp spike can also be used in training in place of the actual spearhead, in order to protect the razor-sharp cutting edges of the blade. When these three components are assembled, they form an extremely effective weapon!
The Maasai Spear is supplied in an attractive box and comes with a robust, injection-moulded sheath that protects you from unwanted contact with the razor-sharp edge or the lower point.
