Man at Arms (MAA) LaFontaine War Sword

The medieval man-at-arms was a brave, loyal fighter full of martial heroic courage who mastered a variety of weapons with great skill. He was a veteran of countless battles who often threw himself into the fray first, and although he was not a knight, he fought and trained side by side with them as a brother in arms. In honour of these rugged, devoted itinerant soldiers, Cold Steel® created the Man at Arms weapons collection.
Compared with Cold Steel's® premium versions, these battle-ready weapons lack the usual shiny blades and silver-polished steel elements, but in quality and performance the products of the MAA series come close to the other products. The fully sharpened, blued blades are distinguished by their unmistakable gun-metal look, which harmonises perfectly with the black handles. And when properly oiled, they reveal their inherent, radiant beauty.
The Man at Arms collection offers a selection of some of the finest Cold Steel® blades, but at a significantly lower price. If you have always wanted to own an edged weapon from the house of Cold Steel® but could never afford one until now, then this collection was made for you.

This sword was named after its creator, the renowned swordsman Luke LaFontaine. The LaFontaine war sword combines elements of a 16th-century sword of war (Sword of War) with elements of a longsword with a complex hilt (Complex Hilt Longsword). Such swords were not worn on the belt or baldric but carried in the hand, over the shoulder or quite simply by a servant or page. They were designed primarily for use on the battlefield and were almost as large as a bidenhänder. They had a long double-edged blade, elaborately designed parrying rings and quillons, a crossguard with pointed ends, and an enclosed ricasso that made it possible to wrap one finger around the crossguard in the middle for more control. They were also fitted with a heavy pommel that served as a counterweight and could itself be a fearsome weapon.
These versatile, complex weapons, with many advantages obvious to any HEMA martial artist, were moreover prestige objects that said a great deal about the status and skill of their owners.

The LaFontaine war sword features a 1050 carbon steel blade that has been deeply blued to produce a rich, deep black lustre (the hallmark of Cold Steel's® Man at Arms collection). It comes fully sharpened and is supplied with a sheath of strong leather and steel.
