Italian longsword with sheath, sharp
The era of the longsword spanned almost three centuries (from about 1350 to 1650), and undoubtedly because it did excellent work! This sword had a characteristic cruciform hilt, a long double-edged blade and was equally suited to facing lightly and heavily armoured opponents. Its especially long blade offered the necessary reach and leverage for powerful thrusting and cutting, while its long crossguard and heavy pommel could be used as striking weapons and also served to hook, unbalance the opponent or control his weapon. When it came to penetrating heavy plate armour, blows with the blade were almost ineffective and were often forgone in favour of the so-called half-swording technique: In this style of fighting, the swordsman held the grip with one hand and grasped the blade with the other, in order to guide the point more precisely and thrust more accurately through the gaps and joints of the knight's armour.
This reconstruction by Cold Steel® was designed after the Italian sword style. Although the blade and centre of gravity are geared more towards thrusting attacks, the cutting edges are also surprisingly effective. In addition, the simply designed cruciform hilt with its long, downward-curved crossguard, its leather-covered wooden grip and its balancing
fishtail pommel offers every possibility of swordsmanship.
The Italian longsword is supplied together with a leather-covered wooden sheath with steel fittings.

Also available is the matching companion dagger for the Italian longsword (art. no. CST-88ITD). Since the sword is well balanced and light enough to be wielded with one hand, Cold Steel® offers a dagger as an off-hand weapon instead of a shield, a targe or a buckler: Scaled down but almost identical in appearance, its very sharply tapering, double-edged blade is designed more for attacks with the point than with the striking edges and is also strong enough to ward off any sword stroke.
