Cavalier Rapier
In the mid-17th century the duel was at the height of its popularity. This method of settling matters of honour with swords was in fact so widespread that the French king Louis XIII banned duelling by law - for fear of losing too many of his important dignitaries in this dangerous undertaking!
Noblemen saw it as their duty as men to defend their honour with the sword. They therefore not only engaged experienced masters to extend their knowledge and skills in swordsmanship, but also sought new types of weapons to gain a decisive advantage. One particular sword began to gain in popularity - a smaller, lighter and faster version of the rapier that offered more comfort when carried and was nimbler in combat. This variant was a precursor of the later court or dress sword (known in English-speaking countries as the small sword), and is simply referred to by some as a transitional rapier.
Cold Steel's® interpretation of this weapon, which was called the Cavalier Rapier, features a sharp, double-edged, very sharply tapering blade that is considerably shorter and lighter - and therefore nimbler and more manoeuvrable - than a classic rapier. The pierced shell guard of hardened steel, the rings, the parrying elements and the knuckle bow offer surprisingly good protection for the hand, while the wire-wrapped grip and the balancing pommel provide maximum comfort and manoeuvrability.
The scope of delivery includes a hand-stitched leather sheath with a locket and chape of steel and an integrated belt hook for optimal wearing comfort.
1055 Carbon Steel
The carbon content and the relatively low proportions of other elements in this steel make it a very stable material that is free from the brittleness inherent in most steels with a higher carbon content. This steel is excellently suited to blades that need to offer high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed blade knives, machetes and swords.
