The word Glamdring comes from the Elvish language Sindarin and means roughly Foe-hammer. The history of this magic sword, whose blade gives off a pale light whenever Orcs are nearby, is mysterious. Gandalf the wizard found it (as Bilbo Baggins found his sword Sting) in the troll caves in Rhûdaur, after the trolls had been turned to stone by a ruse. In Rivendell, Elrond deciphered the runic inscription, which says that it was once forged for Turgon, the King of Gondolin. This magnificent sword remained at Gandalf's side until his last day in Middle-earth.
