Woodsman's Sax

Did you know that the name of the Saxons was derived from the knives they carried? In fact, the seax played such an important role in the everyday life of this tribe that the whole people was named after it.

So what was so special about this knife, which was widespread from the 6th to the 12th century? The answer is simple: it was light and cheap to produce, and at the same time incredibly versatile and effective. As a rule it had no handguard, just a simple handle of wood or bone. The long, wide, strong blade had a straight edge and a convex spine sloping down to the tip (easy to forge), which made it equally ideal for chopping, cutting and carving. The sax was also a proven fighting knife, because thanks to its pronounced forward weighting and its sloping blade tip it could effortlessly deliver terrible blows and thrusts.

Over the years, Cold Steel's® fascination with the history and performance potential of the sax has grown steadily, and it was now decided to create a plain version, which was called the Woodsman's Sax. Like some surviving historical examples, the Woodsman has a sturdy, 28 cm long blade with the characteristic sloping tip and a no-frills wooden handle (of exotic origin).

Every sax comes with a robust, historically faithful leather sheath replica with belt loops and authentic solid brass buckles.

1055 carbon steel
The carbon content and the relatively low proportions of other elements make this steel a very stable material, free of the brittleness inherent in most higher-carbon steels. This steel is excellent for blades that are required to have high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed knives, machetes and swords.
