War Hammer

At the end of the 13th century the sword was the dominant weapon of knights and men-at-arms. With the advent of plate armour, however, its supremacy on the battlefield began to crumble, as it was simply not designed to pierce or dent this new type of armour. This is where the war hammer or battle hammer entered the fray...

The war hammer was arguably the ideal weapon against opponents clad in plate armour. The heavy hammer head could dent helmet and armour massively with a few blows, and the striking spike could open this armour like a modern tin opener! In combat the hammer head was generally used first to knock the enemy down and incapacitate him. Once the felled, helpless opponent lay on the ground, the hammer was turned around and the striking spike was used to pierce his helmet and deliver the coup de grâce.

Cold Steel's® modern interpretation of the war hammer is already very popular with HEMA martial artists and reenactors. This battle hammer is very nimble and handles very well with either one or both hands. The head is drop-forged from 1055 carbon steel and differentially hardened. This means that the tip of the spike and the striking face of the hammer are fully hardened so that they can punch through and break hard material, while the rest of the head is kept softer to better absorb heavy blows. The approx. 76.2 cm long handle is made of straight-grained American hickory and is supplied with two sturdy steel langets.
