Drop Forged Tomahawks
The high-quality Cold Steel® tomahawks have been precision drop-forged from 1055 carbon steel. In the manufacture of striking tools, especially those fitted with a cutting edge, drop forging offers many clear advantages. With the help of several dies (hollow moulds / matrices) connected to massive forging hammers, the steel is shaped step by step into a completely homogeneous mass and press-forged to achieve a uniform grain flow and to minimise the formation of flaws. All Cold Steel® tomahawks have also been differentially hardened: the cutting edge and the striking face of the hammer are fully hardened so that they can be ground sharp, while the rest of the head is kept softer to absorb shock and impact. Spontoon Hawks
Although most tomahawks were designed as chopping or splitting tools, there was also a less common variant, the spontoon tomahawk (Spontoon Hawk). Its blade, designed explicitly for thrusting, could cause stab wounds that were often fatal. This tomahawk usually had either a diamond-shaped blade or one sloping towards the point, sharpened on both sides. As a result it was almost worthless as an everyday utility tool, but as a weapon it was probably fearsome and cruelly effective. As modern spontoon hawks are extremely rare today (apart from inferior imports), Cold Steel® decided to remedy this shortcoming. The new models are available in the classic versions with a sloping (sloping) or diamond-shaped (diamond) blade. They can be fully sharpened and are fitted with a hammer head that imitates the look of the pipe bowl of a traditional pipe tomahawk.

1055 Carbon Steel
The carbon content and the relatively low proportions of other elements in this steel make it a very stable material that is free from the brittleness inherent in most steels with a higher carbon content. This steel is excellently suited to blades that need to offer high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed blade knives, machetes and swords.
