Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick - Polypropylene Walking Cane
Blackthorn (also called sloe) is widespread throughout Ireland and all over the British Isles. For centuries it was regarded as a valuable material for making first-class walking sticks. The original sticks carved from blackthorn were the so-called Irish shillelaghs. These traditional weapons of the Irish rural population were roughly between 60 and 120 cm long. Used as a weapon in practised hands, the shillelagh was so devastating that it was banned by law by the British occupiers. The Irish then turned their shillelagh into a walking stick about 90 cm long and were thus able to get around the law. As a further ban on walking sticks seemed unreasonable, the English let the Irish have their way. The latter were allowed to keep their modified shillelagh, and the world was thereby given a beautiful, functional walking stick, which is simply called a blackthorn.
More than fifteen years ago Cold Steel® tried to source and sell genuine blackthorns. However, this venture proved disappointing: the sticks sold well, but blackthorn is difficult to obtain and somewhat inconsistent in quality. The results of Cold Steel's® most recent advances in developing polypropylene products were so impressive, however, that they have now produced an injection-moulded polypropylene blackthorn. All the advantages of genuine blackthorn are retained, without the disadvantages.
This Irish blackthorn walking stick is modelled on an authentic blackthorn from the private collection of the founder and president of Cold Steel®, Lynn C. Thompson. It was first carefully reproduced in faithful detail and then so skilfully modified that it looks as if taken straight from nature. This magnificent blackthorn reproduction will never crack, swell, splinter or warp, however. In addition, a little soap and water is all that is needed for care.
