African walking stick - Knobkierrie
The Zulu are among the most warlike peoples of South Africa. At the beginning of the 19th century the Zulu king Shaka conquered a wide territory between the Pongola and Umzimkhulu rivers and laid the foundation for the Zulu nation. At the Battle of Isandhlwana in 1879, the Zulu inflicted one of the most disgraceful defeats in history on the British when, with little more than cowhide shields (Isihlangus) and their short stabbing spears (Assegais), they wiped out an entire English column of 1,200 men (supported by artillery and cavalry).
The Zulu are distinguished by their fondness for the so-called Knobkierrie (also simply called Kerrie), which is used both as a walking stick and as a club. These handmade sticks are mostly made from native hardwoods such as wild olive, buckthorn (Pink Ivory) or kudu bush, and are capped with a pronounced spherical knob.
Cold Steel®'s African walking stick, adapted for the Western market, has some of the best features of the traditional Zulu Kerries, such as the wavy shaft and the classic geodesic knob. However, black polypropylene was used in its manufacture instead of expensive exotic hardwood. It is therefore not only indestructible but also weather-resistant. It will not rot, nor warp, crack, splinter, swell, shrink, go mouldy or fade. Although designed primarily as a walking stick, it can also serve as a pointer, lever or driving stick and, in an emergency, even act as a self-defence implement.
